1. Scottdale was founded in 1873 by Joshua Hendrickson as a coal-mining town. The town was named after a company executive, Colonel Thomas A. Scott.

2. Scottdale was once home to the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) which was founded in 1883. The company produced glass for buildings, automobiles, and even television screens. Today, the former PPG plant is home to various businesses and the Scottdale Industrial Park.
