Crawford County is situated in the northwest region of the great state of Pennsylvania. Established on March 12, 1800, the county was named in honor of Colonel William Crawford, an American soldier who fought during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. He was also a close associate of George Washington.
Initially, the region was predominantly inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Erie, Seneca, and Iroquois. European settlers began arriving in the 18th century, and after the American Revolution, the area witnessed rapid development. Meadville, the county seat, was established in 1788 and is the oldest permanent settlement in northwest Pennsylvania.
Crawford County played a crucial role in the early stages of the petroleum industry in the United States. In 1859, Edwin L. Drake successfully drilled the first commercial oil well in the town of Titusville, marking the beginning of the modern petroleum industry.
Agriculture has always been a central aspect of the county's economy, with prominent crops including apples, cherries, and grapes. Manufacturing, healthcare, and education sectors have also become significant contributors to the local economy over time.
Here's a fun fact: Crawford County is home to the annual Thurston Classic hot air balloon event held in Meadville. This exciting festival brings together hot air balloon enthusiasts from across the country and features a series of competitive flights, providing a colorful and exciting spectacle for both residents and visitors alike.
