Lawrence County, located in the western part of Pennsylvania, was officially established on March 20, 1849. It was formed from parts of Mercer and Beaver Counties, and named in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a renowned naval officer from the War of 1812 who is famous for his dying words, "Don't give up the ship!"

The county's history dates back to the 1700s with the establishment of the first Native American settlements and European colonization led primarily by British settlers. Quakers, Amish, and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians were among the first European settlers in the area. During the early 19th century, the region saw rapid development due to the construction of the Erie Extension Canal, which connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.

New Castle, the county seat of Lawrence County, became an industrial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the production of steel, tin plate, and other metal products. Later, the manufacturing focus shifted to ceramics, producing the famed "Shenango China" dinnerware.

A fun fact about Lawrence County is that it's home to the "World's Largest Groundhog", a 14-foot high, 20-foot long sculpture named "Lawrence Hogglesworth" that can be found in the town of Wampum. This larger-than-life groundhog statue was built in 2001 to celebrate the unique local tradition of Groundhog Day.
