Perry County is located in the south-central region of the great state of Pennsylvania. Established on March 22, 1820, Perry County was named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a heroic naval officer during the War of 1812. The county was formed from the parts of Cumberland County, and its county seat is New Bloomfield.

Throughout history, Perry County has maintained a largely rural character with agriculture, lumber, and iron industries shaping the local economy. The Juniata River played a significant role in the county's industrial development during the 18th and 19th centuries, providing transportation and resources. The iron industry began in the county during the late 18th century and continued well into the 19th century. The area gained prominence with its charcoal iron furnaces, which produced iron, stoves, and other household items.

Several charming towns and picturesque landscapes make Perry County a popular destination for tourists and history buffs. Recreational activities are abundant, as the region is surrounded by multiple state parks, including Fowlers Hollow State Park, Little Buffalo State Park, and Colonel Denning State Park.

A fun fact about Perry County is that it is home to the world's longest covered bridge still in use. The Bridgeport Covered Bridge spans 370 feet across the Susquehanna River and was built in 1850. This historical wooden bridge connects two townships and stands as a testament to the legacy of innovative engineering and craftsmanship in the region. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
