Pike County, located in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania, was founded on March 26, 1814. The county was named in honor of General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, an American explorer, and soldier who was best known for his exploration of the Rocky Mountains. The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Lenape and Munsee Delaware, before European settlers arrived during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Soon after its establishment, the county saw the construction of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which began operations in 1828. The canal connected Honesdale, Pennsylvania, to Kingston, New York, significantly boosting the transportation of coal and other goods in the region until it ceased operations in 1898.
Pike County is known for its natural beauty and is home to a portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which attracts millions of visitors annually. One of the county's significant landmarks is the Roebling Aqueduct Bridge, designed by John A. Roebling, who also designed the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. The Roebling Aqueduct Bridge was built in 1847 as part of the Delaware and Hudson Canal and is now the oldest suspension bridge in the United States that is still in use.
A fun fact about Pike County is that it is the birthplace of Gifford Pinchot, a prominent American forester, and politician who served as the first Chief of the United States Forest Service. He was also a two-term Governor of Pennsylvania. The conservation legacy of Pinchot can be experienced at the Gifford Pinchot State Forest, which spreads across several counties, including Pike County, and offers recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping.
