The Official Pennsylvania State Insect
Pennsylvania State Bug
Firefly

The Firefly, or scientifically known as the Photuris pennsylvanica, is the official state insect of Pennsylvania. This species of firefly is native to the eastern United States, and is most active during the late summer and early fall evenings. It is distinguished by its yellowish-green color and its ability to produce a yellowish-green light. This light is produced by a chemical reaction that occurs in its abdomen, which is how fireflies can be seen glowing in the dark. Fireflies have long been a part of Pennsylvania's culture, and in 1974 the Pennsylvania legislature officially voted to make the firefly the state insect. This decision was made after schoolchildren from across the state wrote letters to their state senator asking for the firefly to be the state insect. The firefly is a symbol of Pennsylvania's natural beauty, and is a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment.
