Pennsylvania State Motto: Virtue, Liberty and Independence
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Pennsylvania State Quarter

The Pennsylvania state quarter was designed by artist and sculptor Terrence Farrell and was released in 1999. The obverse of the quarter features the state's official motto, "Virtue, Liberty and Independence," along with a keystone symbolizing the unity of the original 13 colonies. The reverse features a depiction of the Liberty Bell with the inscription "1776," honoring the year of Pennsylvania's independence. Other symbols on the reverse include a stylized outline of the state, a Douglas fir tree, and a cornstalk. The symbols and meanings behind the design of the Pennsylvania quarter are meant to represent the state's history, culture, and values.

The second Pennsylvania State Quarter

The Pennsylvania National Park quarter was released as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters program in 2021. It is the 47th release in the series, which began in 2010. The obverse (heads) side of the quarter features a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and "QUARTER DOLLAR". The reverse (tails) side of the quarter depicts a representation of Valley Forge National Historical Park, which was established in 1976 to commemorate the role of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The design features a close up of a Continental soldier in winter uniform, kneeling in prayer within the park's boundaries. Inscriptions on the reverse side include "VALLEY FORGE", "PENNSYLVANIA", "2021", and "E PLURIBUS UNUM".

The design of the Pennsylvania National Park quarter is meant to honor the soldiers of the Continental Army and their sacrifices during the Revolutionary War. Valley Forge National Historical Park has become a symbol of patriotism and the perseverance of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The quarter also serves as a reminder of the strength of the United States, and the importance of preserving our national parks and historical sites.
