Mahanoy City was once a thriving coal-mining town, known for its anthracite coal production. It was home to several coal mines and had a population of over 14,000 at its peak in the early 1900s. However, the decline of the coal industry led to a decline in the town's population, which is now around 4,000 people. Despite this, Mahanoy City has held onto its proud heritage and is known for its community spirit and annual events such as the Homecoming and the Santa Parade. The town also has several landmarks, including the Civil War monument and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, which was built in the early 1900s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
