The town was originally settled by German immigrants in the 1730s who named it "Ephrata" which means "fruitful" in Hebrew, reflecting the town's fertile agricultural land. Today, Ephrata is known for its historic architecture, including the Ephrata Cloister, a National Historic Landmark that was originally a religious community founded in the 1700s.
