Oliver is actually a former coal-mining town that was founded in 1872 by the Oliver Iron Mining Company, which operated several mines in the area. The town was named after Joseph D. Oliver, who was a prominent businessman and founder of the company. Today, the village of Oliver may be known for its close proximity to the Laurel Highlands, which offer plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, camping, and fishing.
