New Salem is a small village located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a part of German Township and it is named after Salem, North Carolina. New Salem is notable for its rich history and cultural heritage. The village is known for its pre-Civil War era architecture, including the historic Mt. Vernon Furnace, a blast furnace dating back to the 1830s. The village also played a significant role in the Underground Railroad during the mid-19th century. Today, New Salem is a popular destination for history enthusiasts, as well as outdoor enthusiasts, who come for the nearby hiking and biking trails in Bear Run Nature Reserve.
