The village of Christiana, Pennsylvania is a historic town that played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, where fugitive slaves were helped in their journey to freedom. Here are a few more facts:
- The Christiana Riot was a violent clash that occurred on September 11, 1851, when a group of African American men and white abolitionists resisted the attempts of slave catchers to capture four fugitive slaves who were seeking refuge in the town. One of the slave catchers was killed, and more than thirty people were indicted and later acquitted.
- The town is home to the Christiana Underground Railroad Center, a museum and education center that teaches visitors about the history of the Underground Railroad and the involvement of Christiana in the movement.
- The town is part of the Amish Country in Lancaster County, known for its picturesque farmland, horse-drawn buggies, and traditional way of life.
- The population of Christiana was 1,164 as of the 2010 census. The town covers an area of 1.6 square miles.
