The Official Rhode Island State Quarters

Rhode Island State Motto: Hope
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Rhode Island State Quarter

The Rhode Island state quarter was released in 2000 as part of the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. The obverse of the quarter features a likeness of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, with the words "Rhode Island" and "1636" inscribed on the left and right sides respectively. The reverse of the quarter features an image of the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, and four symbols representing the state's history. The four symbols are a sailing vessel, a center anchor, a scallop shell and a yellow rose, with the words "Hope" and "Ocean State" inscribed above and below the image. The sailing vessel and anchor represent the importance of the state's maritime history, while the scallop shell and yellow rose represent the state's official symbols.

The second Rhode Island State Quarter

The Rhode Island quarter is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which is a series of 56 circulating quarters released by the United States Mint from 2010 to 2021. The Rhode Island quarter was released on June 3, 2019, as the 43rd issue in the series. The quarter features a depiction of the historic tower of the Newport Tower, located in Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island. The design also includes the inscription "Rhode Island" and "1776", in reference to the year in which Rhode Island declared its independence.

The Newport Tower has been a source of speculation since its construction in the 17th century. Some have suggested that it was built by the Dutch colonists, while others believe that it was built by Norse explorers centuries before. Whatever its origins, the tower has become a symbol of Rhode Island's history and culture. The Newport Tower is also a reminder of the state's maritime history and its importance in the development of the United States. The inclusion of the Newport Tower in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a fitting tribute to Rhode Island's role in the early history of the nation.
