Did you know that the first successful submarine attack in history happened during the American Civil War just off the coast of Charleston, which is the neighboring city to North Charleston? On February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine named H.L. Hunley attacked and sank the Union ship USS Housatonic using a spar torpedo. Although Hunley herself also sank during the attack, it was a significant milestone in naval warfare. The wreckage of Hunley was discovered and raised in 2000 and is now displayed at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston.
