Front of the US quarter dollar coin   South Carolina State Quarter

The South Carolina state quarter was created as part of the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. It was released in 1999 and was the 8th quarter released in the series. The design of the South Carolina quarter features an outline of the state on the reverse side and the state's official flower, the yellow jessamine, in the center. The state motto, "Animis Opibusque Parati" is inscribed around the edge of the reverse. The obverse side of the quarter features the familiar profile of George Washington as well as the inscription "South Carolina 1788".

The symbols on the South Carolina state quarter represent the history and culture of the state. The outline of the state on the reverse symbolizes the state's geographical features, while the yellow jessamine serves as a reminder of the state's official flower. The state motto, "Animis Opibusque Parati", translates to "Prepared in Mind and Resources", and serves as an expression of South Carolina's strength and resilience. The obverse side of the quarter, which features the profile of George Washington, pays homage to the first president of the United States, who was also a native of South Carolina.

The second South Carolina State Quarter

The South Carolina quarter was released in 2021 as part of the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters series. It honors Congaree National Park in South Carolina, the only national park in the state. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States. The reverse of the coin depicts a view of the Congaree River and its swamp forest, while the bottom of the design includes the park's official name, "Congaree National Park".

The design on the South Carolina quarter is meant to represent the importance of conservation and the protection of the state's natural resources. The Congaree National Park protects the largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern United States and is home to numerous rare and endangered species. The park is also widely recognized for its diversity of plant and animal life and for its biological research. The design of the quarter is meant to symbolize the importance of preserving the state's natural resources and protecting its wildlife.
