Columbia is the capital and second-largest city of the U.S. state of South Carolina, located at the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers. The city was founded in 1786 as the site for the new state capital and was named for Christopher Columbus.

During the Civil War, Columbia was the center of political and military activity for the Confederacy, and it served as an important transportation hub for the region. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman and his Union troops entered the city and burned much of it, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

In the years following the war, Columbia was rebuilt and experienced significant growth as a center for agriculture, industry, and education. The University of South Carolina was founded in Columbia in 1801 and has since become one of the city's largest employers and a major contributor to its cultural and intellectual life.

Today, Columbia is a diverse and vibrant city with a thriving arts scene, a rich cultural heritage, and a strong economy driven by healthcare, manufacturing, and education. Its landmarks include the South Carolina State House, the historic Congaree Vista district, the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, and the Columbia Museum of Art.
