A fun fact about Sioux Falls is that it was named after the Sioux Falls, a series of cascading waterfalls on the Big Sioux River that flows through the city. However, the falls were completely flooded in 1958 when the Army Corps of Engineers constructed a dam upstream, so now only a small portion of the falls can be seen in Falls Park.
As for an historical event, Sioux Falls played an important role during World War II as the location of the Sioux Falls Army Airfield, which trained thousands of military pilots during the war. The airfield was also the site of a prisoner of war camp, where German and Italian prisoners were held. After the war, the airfield was converted to a civilian airport and later became Joe Foss Field, named after the South Dakota Medal of Honor recipient and former governor of the state.
