- Whitewood was founded in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush and was incorporated as a village in 1888. Its name is said to come from the color of the local clay soil.
- Whitewood is home to two places listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Black Hills Fish Hatchery and the Whitewood Creek Archeological District. The Fish Hatchery, established in 1896, is the oldest operating federal fish hatchery in the country. The archeological district contains Native American artifacts dating back over 8,000 years.
