South Dakota State Motto: Under God, the people rule
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   South Dakota State Quarter

The South Dakota state quarter features an image of Mount Rushmore, designed by John Merren. The design of the quarter symbolizes the importance of the Black Hills of South Dakota and the four presidents carved into the mountain, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The design also includes the state's motto, "Under God, the People Rule," and nineteen stars, representing South Dakota's admission as the forty-ninth state in the union. The stars are also meant to symbolize the nineteen Native American tribes that are present in the state.

The second South Dakota State Quarter

The South Dakota National Park Quarter was issued on November 5th, 2012. It was the fourth coin released in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The reverse (tail side) of the coin depicts a view of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It also bears the inscriptions "Mount Rushmore", "South Dakota", "2012" and "E Pluribus Unum". The obverse (front) of the coin features a modified version of the original Washington Quarter design, with the inscriptions "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and "Quarter Dollar".

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program began in 2010, with the release of the Hot Springs National Park Quarter. Every year, five new coins are released, one from each US state and territory. The coins commemorate national parks and other national sites. The program is being released in a series of 10-year increments, with each year's coins representing the different states and territories of the United States.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is featured on the South Dakota National Park Quarter, is a symbol of national pride, patriotism, and democracy. The monument was carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota in the late 1920s, and is an iconic representation of the nations four most influential presidents. The four faces, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln have come to symbolize the birth, growth, development, and preservation of the United States. The South Dakota National Park Quarter serves to commemorate this important symbol of American history.
