In my 40s, I found myself divorced, a single dad, and embarking on a brand-new career. The past two decades were dedicated to pursuing my dreams and following a plan centered around individual success and adventure. Career was my primary focus, and happiness and excitement were meant to be my rewards. Marriage and parenthood were never part of my plans; I lacked examples of what they could be like.
Growing up in a dysfunctional home, I knew I had to break free and create a different life for myself. With the support of inspiring teachers, I worked hard, excelled in school, and learned that I deserved more. I put myself through college, took on multiple jobs, and once I graduated, I left my childhood behind and never looked back.
After college, my path was unclear at first. I was unsure of my direction, but I knew I needed to distance myself from the past. Eventually, I discovered a fulfilling career in infrastructure and energy, dealing with large-scale projects, land acquisition, and diverse industries.
My new life brought significant responsibilities, extensive travel, and demanding billion-dollar projects. Amidst it all, I managed to experience thrilling adventures, racing cars, engaging in adrenaline-filled activities, and living a successful yet chaotic life.
However, I realized I was running away from my past, avoiding emotional connections and commitment. Marriage and children were never on my radar until I unexpectedly fell in love on St. Patrick's Day in 2010. I found myself returning home more frequently, developing a deep connection with this girl. Eventually, I received the news that I was going to be a father.
Being a parent was something I had never desired, and I was terrified. But surprisingly, I felt happiness when I heard those words. Initially, I didn't know how to be a good parent when my daughter was born, so I focused on providing for her materially. I convinced myself that by working long hours and ensuring she had a comfortable life, I was fulfilling my role. Her mother, soon to be my wife, took on the role of a full-time, present mother.
Yet, as my daughter grew and began to understand my absence, her tears broke me. I realized I needed to change, to be there for her, and break the cycle I had experienced. Despite the risk, I left my lucrative career to start anew, determined to be the present father I never had. While it didn't salvage my marriage, it saved my relationship with my daughter. We have an incredible bond, and I have no regrets. I am breaking the cycle of abuse and creating a positive family legacy.
Now Im a single Dad, making this business work despite the challenges. I love helping families find their dream homes. I know what its like to live in a house, not a Home. A place that serves its purpose of giving shelter but not in being a place that feels safe, filled with love, a place of peace. That is what home feels like.
