Fun and verifiable fact: In 1941, the world's first miniature golf course was built in Chattanooga. The course, called Tom Thumb Golf, was a big hit and sparked the rise of miniature golf's popularity across the United States.

Historical anecdote: During the Civil War, Chattanooga was a strategic location for both the Confederate and Union forces. In November 1863, the Union Army under General Ulysses S. Grant won a major victory against the Confederate Army at the Battle of Chattanooga. This victory opened up the gateway to the Deep South for the Union Army and marked a turning point in the Civil War. After the battle, President Abraham Lincoln visited Chattanooga and declared it the "Gateway to the South."
