Jackson County, Tennessee
.Jackson County is located in the Upper Cumberland region of the great state of Tennessee. The county was established in 1801, named in honor of Andrew Jackson, who would later become the seventh President of the United States. Gainesboro serves as the county seat for Jackson County. Jackson County covers a total area of about 320 square miles and is bordered by the Cumberland River to the south and the Roaring River to the west.
In the early 19th century, Jackson County was a prosperous area due to its strategic location near major waterways. The Cumberland River provided essential transportation routes for settlers and their goods. Soon after its establishment, numerous mills, stores, and schools began to appear, and agriculture thrived in the area.
The Civil War had a significant impact on Jackson County-a majority of its residents supported the Confederate cause. Although no major battles took place in the county, it served as a strategic location for both Union and Confederate troops due to its proximity to the Cumberland River.
Fun Fact: Jackson County has been referred to as the "Rock Castle" by many of its residents, a nickname derived from the numerous caves and rock formations that can be found throughout the county. A few of these caves were used to store salt peter, an important ingredient for making gunpowder during the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
