Loudon County, located in the great state of Tennessee, is steeped in rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Officially established on May 27, 1870, the county was named in honor of Fort Loudoun, itself named after John Campbell, the Earl of Loudoun and a commander in the British Army during the French and Indian War. Fort Loudoun, which stood nearby, was a key British outpost during that same War. The County is situated in East Tennessee, along the Tennessee River, and consists of five incorporated cities: Greenback, Lenoir City, Loudon, Philadelphia, and Tellico Village.
Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee. In the mid-1800s, the arrival of the railroad transformed the region by connecting it to larger markets and thus promoting growth in both agriculture and industry.
One key industrial development in Loudon County was the establishment of the Lenoir Cotton Mill in Lenoir City, which became a significant driver of economic growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The mill, operated by the Lenoir Manufacturing Company, produced cotton cloth and other materials, providing many jobs and transforming Lenoir City into a thriving hub for the textile industry.
As for a fun fact: The town of Philadelphia in Loudon County earned its name as an homage to the famed American Revolutionary War battle, the Battle of Brandywine. Philadelphia, Tennessee was founded and named by two brothers and Revolutionary War veterans, Samuel and William Wallace. Their father, Peter Wallace, fought and died at the Battle of Brandywine, which took place near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The brothers gave their settlement the name "Philadelphia" to honor their father and the battle's location.
