Louisville, Tennessee is the birthplace of Sequoyah, the inventor of Cherokee syllabary. In the early 19th century, he created a writing system for the Cherokee language, which allowed them to read and write their language for the first time. This made the Cherokee Nation one of the most literate groups of indigenous people in the world at that time.
