Did you know that Knoxville, Tennessee is actually named after Henry Knox—a Revolutionary War general and the first U.S. Secretary of War? In 1785, Knox headed south from Boston, Massachusetts to assess western lands owned by the United States. There, he visited a settlement named White's Fort and suggested that the area be named "Knoxville" in his honor. The settlers agreed and the name has stuck ever since.
