Andrews County is located in the western part of Texas, in the heart of the Permian Basin. It was named after the brave and resourceful Richard Andrews, who was the first soldier to lose his life during the Texas Revolution. Andrews County was officially established on August 21, 1876, although the area was sparsely populated until the 20th century.

The early inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes such as the Comanche and Apache, followed by Spanish explorers and later by American settlers. Ranching and farming became primary economic activities in the county during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The discovery of oil in the 1920s led to a significant population boom and economic growth in Andrews County. The oil industry remains the primary driver of the local economy even today. The county seat, Andrews, is the largest city in the region, acting as both a commercial and administrative hub.

A fun fact about Andrews County is that it is home to the Waste Control Specialists (WSC), a company that runs a facility managing low-level radioactive materials. This makes Andrews County one of the few places in the United States storing and processing this type of waste.
