Angelina County is located in the deep piney woods of East Texas and was established on April 22, 1846, as one of the original 23 counties in the state. It was named after a Hainai Native American woman called Angelina, who served as an interpreter and mediator between Europeans and indigenous tribes in the 17th century. The Hainai tribe was part of the Caddo Confederacy, a significant regional power during that time. The city of Lufkin serves as the county seat.
As European settlers began to explore the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish settlers established missions, while Anglo-American settlers started arriving in the 1820s during Mexican rule. Following the annexation of Texas to the United States, in the 19th century, the region predominantly developed as a rural collection of agricultural communities, with lumber, cattle, and cotton as their primary economic pursuits.
The arrival of the Houston, East, and West Texas Railway between Houston and Shreveport in the early 1880s brought immense change to the county. The establishment of Jay Gould's "Second International and Great Northern Railroad" in 1900 provided another boost, significantly expanding the local lumber industry, shaping Lufkin's growth and development.
Fun Fact: In Angelina County, you can find the Ellen Trout Zoo, which has been serving the Lufkin area since 1967. This impressive 15-acre zoo features over 800 animals, including a miniature train ride for families to enjoy.
