Coleman County, located in the central part of Texas, was established on February 1, 1858, and named in honor of Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and an early soldier in the Texas Revolution. The county seat is the city of Coleman.
The area that is now Coleman County was once inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Comanche and Kiowa. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the late 1850s, and the local economy relied heavily on agriculture, primarily cotton and cattle ranching. The arrival of the railroad in 1886 stimulated the growth of the region by connecting it with larger markets.
During the 20th century, Coleman County diversified its economy by incorporating oil and natural gas production along with agriculture. It has continued to develop by hosting various community events and festivals, focusing on ice production, peanut farming, and attracting tourists to its beautiful landscapes, such as the Hords Creek Reservoir and Lake Coleman.
Fun fact: Coleman County is home to several historical landmarks, and one lesser-known fact is that it had one of the country's first electrical generating plants. In 1895, the Coleman Electric Plant began operations, making the city of Coleman one of the first in Texas to establish a municipally-owned power company. This allowed Coleman to be one of the earliest cities with a fully electrified downtown area, even before the state capital, Austin.
