Howard County, Texas
.Howard County, situated in the great state of Texas, was formed on August 21, 1876, from the larger landmass of Bexar County. Named in honor of Volney Erskine Howard, a Mississippi congressman, the county's economy was initially supported by farming, ranching, and the railroad industry. The region's semi-arid climate and rolling landscape provided suitable conditions for cattle ranching, and the growth of cotton farming would come later.
In 1881, the significance of Howard County grew when the Texas and Pacific Railway constructed its line through the region. The town of Big Spring, named after the famous spring located there, was designated as the county seat. This development led to an increase in population and economic activities, including retail trade, banking, and hotel businesses.
The discovery of oil in the area in the 1920s further transformed the local economy. With Big Spring as the central hub, petroleum exploration and production became a mainstay for Howard County. Refineries were established and the oil boom fueled the county's growth.
The presence of Big Spring Army Airfield, now known as the Big Spring Airpark, played a pivotal role during World War II as well for the training of bomber pilots. Post-war, it was converted into the Webb Air Force Base, which operated until 1977.
One fun fact about Howard County is that it is home to the Hangar 25 Air Museum, dedicated to the history of the Big Spring Army Airfield and Webb Air Force Base. The museum showcases World War II relics, memorabilia, and vintage aircraft, offering an insightful look into the county's aviation history.
