Navarro County, located in the great state of Texas, was established and organized on April 25, 1846. It was named in honor of Jose Antonio Navarro, a prominent Tejano statesman, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county is situated in east-central Texas and covers an area of approximately 1,086 square miles. The county seat is Corsicana, which was founded by Jose Antonio Navarro's son, Jose Maria Jesus Carbajal, in 1848.
The region was initially inhabited by the Tawakoni and Anadarko Native American tribes before European exploration and settlement. A wide range of European settlers, including Spanish, French, and Anglo-Americans, began moving into the area in the early 19th century, bringing diverse cultural influences to Navarro County.
Throughout its history, Navarro County has been rooted in agriculture and ranching, with the main crops being cotton, corn, wheat, and oats. The Corsicana oilfield discovery in 1894 significantly impacted the county's economy, making it one of the first major oil-producing regions in Texas. The oilfield's discovery occurred accidentally when the city of Corsicana drilled a water well, leading to a significant oil boom in the area.
One fun fact about Navarro County is that it is home to the "Fruitcake Capital of the World" in the city of Corsicana. The famous Collin Street Bakery, which originated in 1896, has been producing its world-renowned fruitcakes and shipping them globally ever since.
