Rains County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on June 9, 1870, and was formed from parts of Hopkins, Hunt, and Wood Counties. The county was named in honor of Emory Rains, a Texas legislator who also played a significant role in the development of the Texas Constitution. The county seat is Emory, which also happens to be the largest city in the county.
The region was initially inhabited by the Caddo Indians before the arrival of European settlers. The Cherokee Indians also lived in the area in the early 19th century, followed by European-American settlers in the 1840s. The area experienced steady growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven primarily by agriculture and the development of the railroads.
A fun fact about Rains County is that it is the "Eagle Capital" of Texas, according to a Texas House Resolution passed in 1995. Each year, the county hosts the Rains County Eagle Fest, an event that celebrates the significant population of American Bald Eagles that reside in the area. During the festival, locals and tourists participate in a variety of activities, including bird-watching tours, wildlife presentations, and educational exhibits about eagles and other native wildlife species.
