Rusk County is located in the eastern part of Texas and was established in 1843. Named in honor of Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a prominent Texas politician and a leader in the Texas Revolution, Rusk County has a rich history in the area that is now known as the Piney Woods region of Texas.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was home to the Caddo Indians, a tribe known for its advanced agricultural practices and intricate pottery. The Caddos lived in the area for hundreds of years, and several important archaeological sites in Rusk County provide a glimpse into their prehistoric way of life.

During the early 19th century, European settlers primarily from the southern United States began to arrive in the region, attracted by the fertile land and abundant resources. The area's dense forests provided plenty of lumber for construction and also became the basis for a thriving timber industry in the 20th century.

Rusk County played a significant role during the Republic of Texas era, and later, during the Civil War. The county seat, Henderson, served as an important hub for military and commercial activities during these times. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the region's economy diversified to include cotton farming, oil production, and other industries.

One fun fact about Rusk County is that it's home to one of the tallest bridges in Texas, the Rusk County Memorial Bridge. Nicknamed "The Mill Pond Bridge," it spans the picturesque Mill Pond Lake in the city of Henderson, offering scenic views of the surrounding area.
