Winkler County is located in the western region of the great state of Texas, with its county seat being Kermit. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, it was later explored by Spanish conquistadors searching for cities of gold in the 16th century. The county was created in 1887 from nearby Tom Green County and it was named after Confederate veteran and businessman Clinton McKamy Winkler. However, Winkler County was not fully organized until 1910.
The region was primarily involved in ranching and agriculture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The discovery of oil at the Hendrick Oil Field in 1926 led to a significant economic boom and an increase in population. This growth persisted throughout the 20th century as oil and gas production remained a critical part of the local economy.
A fun fact about Winkler County is that it is home to the "Sand Hills State Park," a unique destination with sand dunes that rise up to 70 feet high. Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including sand surfing, picnicking, and hiking the dunes that were formed more than 10,000 years ago during the Holocene Period.
