Iron County was formed from a portion of unorganized territory within the Utah Territory, and the county seat was first located in Parowan, which also served as the first settlement.
In the early 1850s, Mormon Church leaders, including Brigham Young, encouraged settlers' migration to the region, recognizing the need for iron for the expanding population and to support their economic endeavors. The first iron works in Iron County were located near present-day Cedar City, which was founded in 1851 as the location for these iron works.
