Juab County, Utah
.Juab County, located in the central-western region of the great state of Utah, was officially established on March 3, 1852, as one of the original seven counties in the Utah Territory. It is named after the Native American Ute tribe word "yoab," which translates to "thirsty plain" or "level plain."
The first settlements in the area were predominantly Mormon pioneer settlements in the 1850s. The communities of Chicken Creek, Salt Creek, Round Valley, and Goshen were established as agricultural areas. Mining was a significant industry in this region in the late 19th and 20th centuries, with valuable minerals including silver, lead, and gold.
In the early 20th century, transportation infrastructure, particularly the railroad system, helped Juab County achieve economic growth. The completion of the San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake Railroads in 1903 enabled the development of new agricultural and mining activities.
Today, Juab County is known mostly for its recreational opportunities and natural beauty. It's home to several popular attractions, including the Little Sahara Sand Dunes, Yuba State Park, and the historic Topaz Internment Camp. The county seat is Nephi.
A fun fact about Juab County is that, in the early 1900s, the area housed a "Real Salt Lake" soccer team, which played in a soccer league maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The soccer team's name derives from the nickname for Juab County, "Utah's Real Salt Lake."
