Piute County is located in the central part of the great state of Utah. It was established on January 16, 1865, and named after the Native American tribe, the Paiute, who inhabited the area for centuries before the arrival of the Mormon pioneers. The county occupies an area of 766 square miles, making it one of the smallest counties in Utah.

The first recorded settlements by the Mormon pioneers took place in the 1860s, where they established the towns of Circleville, Marysvale, and Junction. The region struggled with severe weather conditions and violent conflicts with local Native American tribes during the Black Hawk War of 1865-1867. Many of the initial settlements were abandoned until the war ended.

Piute County's economy was initially based on farming and livestock, as well as mining due to the discovery of zinc, copper, gold, and silver mines in the area. The establishment of the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad in the 1890s aided in the transportation of minerals, which significantly helped the growth of the region.

Today, Piute County's economy is largely driven by agriculture, livestock, mining, and tourism. Outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping attract visitors to the beautiful nearby national parks and forests including, Fishlake National Forest and the Great Basin National Heritage Area.

Fun Fact: The intriguing (and mysterious) Circleville Massacre took place in the area in April 1866. The violent incident resulted in the death of nearly two dozen Paiute tribe members by the Utah Territorial Militia during the Black Hawk War. The exact details of the event remain a point of historical debate and curiosity.
