Wayne County, Utah
.Wayne County, located in the great state of Utah, was established on March 10, 1892. It is named in honor of Wayne Robinson, the first child born in the area who was the son of a prominent Utah state legislator, Willam C. Robinson. The county comprises a land area of 2,466 square miles and is part of the Colorado Plateau region.
During the 19th-century, early settlers consisted mainly of Mormon pioneers who arrived in the area seeking fertile land for farming and ranching. Towns such as Loa, Lyman, Bicknell, and Torrey were established as agricultural centers, supporting the local economy.
Wayne County boasts an array of stunning natural attractions, including the world-renowned Capitol Reef National Park, which was established in 1971. The park is famous for its unique geological features, such as the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile long geological formation that is the result of millennia of erosion, faulting, and folding of the Earth's crust. It contains numerous cliffs, domes, and canyons for visitors to explore.
Fun Fact: One of Wayne County's towns, Hanksville, is allegedly named after a local outlaw known as Hank Vaughan. In the late 1800s, Vaughan supposedly had a hideout in the surrounding desert that he used to evade the law. Today, Hanksville is a small community that serves as a stopover for visitors en route to Capitol Reef National Park and other nearby attractions.
