The Official Utah State Insect
Utah State Bug
Honey Bee

Honey Bee is the state insect of Utah. It was officially declared the state insect in 1983, following a successful campaign by elementary school students. Honey bees are actually social insects that live in large colonies, with each colony containing one queen bee, a few hundred male drones, and thousands of female worker bees. They are incredibly important to our ecosystem, as they are responsible for pollinating many of the crops we rely on for food. Honey bees also produce a delicious food called honey, which is collected from their hives and used in many recipes. Honey bees have some interesting behaviors, like their “waggle” dance, which they do to communicate with each other. They are also known to have an incredible sense of direction, so they can find their way back to the hive even after travelling long distances. Honey bees are a valuable part of our natural world and a great symbol for the state of Utah.
