One notable historical event that took place in Chesapeake, Virginia was the Battle of Great Bridge during the American Revolution. On December 9, 1775, Virginia Patriots defeated British troops at Great Bridge, which marked a significant victory for the colonial forces. The battle is considered to be the first land battle of the American Revolution fought in Virginia. The victory at Great Bridge encouraged the Continental Congress to authorize Virginia's independent companies as a new regiment. Today, visitors to the city can visit the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation to learn more about this important event in American history.
