Augusta County, located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, was established in 1738, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. Originally, it was formed from Orange County, and during its initial period, Augusta County's size included much of the western frontier of colonial Virginia, stretching to the Mississippi River and into modern-day Illinois.

Augusta County played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War as well as the Civil War due to its strategic location along the Valley Pike. The region consisted of a largely farming populace, and eventually developed into an important agricultural hub.

Staunton, the county seat, was founded in 1747 by William Beverley, a prominent landowner and politician. His influence helped to establish the town as an important center of commerce and transportation, since it served as a stagecoach stop and later as a railway junction.

One fun fact about Augusta County is that it's the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. Wilson was born in Staunton on December 28, 1856, and his childhood home is now the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum.
