Clarke County, located in the northern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia, holds a rich historical background, dating back to its formation in 1836. Carved from Frederick County, Clarke County encompasses over 178 square miles and is named after Revolutionary War hero Major General George Rogers Clark.

The county's Native American history is marked by the presence of the Iroquois, Shawnee, and other tribes long before European settlers arrived. English settlers began establishing themselves in the region during the 18th century, when Lord Fairfax, a prominent land baron, granted large tracts of land to prospective settlers. The region also saw significant events during the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War that left a lasting impact on its development.

Clarke County is recognized for its rich agricultural heritage, with fertile soil for growing crops like wheat, corn, and orchard fruits. Additionally, the county is home to several historic sites, including the Holy Cross Abbey, a Trappist monastery that was established in 1950.

A fun fact about Clarke County is that in the 1800s, a gold mining operation near the Blue Ridge Mountains resulted in the discovery of the largest nugget ever found east of the Mississippi River, which weighed a whopping 23.75 pounds.
