Dickenson County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Virginia. Established in 1880, it was named after William J. Dickenson, a Virginia state senator at the time. The county is part of the larger Appalachian region, specifically situated in the heart of the Appalachian Plateau.

In the earlier days, Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and Shawnee, were the main inhabitants of the region. European settlers began arriving in the mid-1700s, including Scottish, English, and Irish immigrants. Coal mining played a significant role in the county's overall development, contributing to its economic growth and present-day population.

Interestingly, Dickenson County is sometimes referred to as the "Mule Capital of the World" because of its links to mule trading, mule-driven coal mining, and the Ridgeway Mule Day Festival. This festival, a fun fact about Dickenson County, pays tribute to the hardworking mules and honors the region's important coal mining heritage.
