James City County, located in the great state of Virginia, is steeped in rich American history. Established in 1634 as one of the eight original shires (counties) in the English colony of Virginia, the county was named in honor of King James I of England. The county's land area spans about 144 square miles, and it is part of the greater Hampton Roads region.

One of the most historically significant sites in James City County is Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas, founded in 1607. It served as the capital of the Virginia Colony for 83 years until it was moved to Williamsburg in 1699. James City County's history is deeply connected to the early colonial period of the United States, as well as the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras.

A fun fact about this region is that the heart of James City County, Colonial Williamsburg, is a living history museum. Colonial Williamsburg showcases the life and culture of 18th-century Virginia, complete with costumed interpreters, restored historic buildings, and interactive experiences for visitors. This unique attraction is one of the largest living history museums in the United States and attracts millions of visitors each year.
