King and Queen County is a rural county located in the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was originally established in 1691 from the territory of New Kent County, and it was named for the reigning monarchs of England, King William III and Queen Mary II.

The county is rich in historical significance and is known for its colonial-era forts, plantations, and churches. The history of King and Queen County is tied to early American settlement, plantation economy, and the prominence of the Church of England. It played an essential role during the American Revolution due to its strategic location between the capital of Williamsburg and key transportation routes.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, King and Queen County became a center of agricultural production, particularly tobacco, which was an essential cash crop during that era. This led to the development of many large plantations, some of which still exist today.

One fun fact about King and Queen County is that it boasts the longest-serving elected official in the United States, the county treasurer, Mildred Sadler, who served for over 60 years. She began her tenure in 1949 and stayed in office until her passing in 2010, making her a legendary figure in the county's history.
