Lunenburg County is located in the southern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1746, it was formed from the southern part of Brunswick County. The county is named in honor of Charles Paulet, 3rd Duke of Bolton, an English nobleman who was also the colonizer of Nova Scotia with the title of Earl of Lunenburg. The county seat is located in the town of Lunenburg.

During the 18th century, Lunenburg County's economy was primarily based on the cultivation of tobacco. The tobacco grown here was known as "bright tobacco" due to its vibrant color and was a highly sought after product. As the population grew, the county was divided several times, eventually giving rise to several new counties including Charlotte, Mecklenburg, and Halifax.

The county played a role in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War as soldiers from the area participated in notable battles such as the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the Revolutionary War and the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Lunenburg County's historic courthouse, built in 1827, is one of the finest examples of the Federal-style architecture in the Commonwealth and still serves its original purpose today.

One fun fact about Lunenburg County, Virginia is that it is home to the historic Nutbush Church, which was built in the mid-18th century. The church is an excellent example of Virginia's early colonial architecture, and it was once used as a meeting place for local militia and a temporary hospital during the Revolutionary War.

Today, Lunenburg County remains a largely rural area, with its economy still based on agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing. The county's rich history, beautiful countryside, and friendly communities make it an attractive destination for visitors and residents alike.
