Montgomery County, in the great state of Virginia, was formed in 1777 from Fincastle County, during the American Revolutionary War. The county was named in honor of General Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War hero who played significant roles in the invasion of Canada and was killed in the Battle of Quebec in 1775. The county seat and largest town, Christiansburg, was established in 1792 and named after Colonel William Christian, a patriot during the American Revolution.
Montgomery County is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which provides the area with beautiful landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. The county is also home to Virginia Tech, a prominent research university located in Blacksburg, founded in 1872. Virginia Tech's presence created a hub for research, technology, and innovation in the region.
A fun fact about Montgomery County is that it's a part of the New River Valley, which features the New River - one of the world's oldest rivers. Geologists believe that the New River predates the formation of the Appalachian Mountains and is over 320 million years old, making it even older than the Nile River. The New River provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, kayaking, and tubing.
