Rockingham County, located in the great state of Virginia, was established on March 1, 1778, and named in honor of English statesman Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. The county is nestled in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains, with the city of Harrisonburg serving as its county seat.

Rockingham County is steeped in rich history, from Native American tribes like the Iroquois and Siouan-speaking Monacan, who inhabited the area long before European settlers, to the Mennonite and Brethren communities who found their home in the county during the 18th century. The European settlers were primarily Swiss and German immigrants, who contributed significantly to the region's agricultural growth over the years.

During the Civil War, Rockingham County witnessed several skirmishes and battles due to its strategic location in the Shenandoah Valley, which was an essential supply route for the Confederate armies.

Today, Rockingham County is famous for its vibrant agricultural sector and is often referred to as the "breadbasket" of the American Revolution. The area is a major producer of poultry, dairy, and various crops, including corn and soybeans.

Fun Fact: Rockingham County is home to the Shenandoah National Park's southern entrance, which features the renowned Skyline Drive, a scenic 105-mile road that runs through the park, offering breathtaking vistas and stunning views of the entire valley. This makes Rockingham County a popular destination for tourists to explore the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of the region.
