Staunton County, commonly referred to as the city of Staunton, is an independent city located in the state of Virginia, USA. Incorporated as a city in 1871, Staunton serves as the county seat for Augusta County, even though it is not politically part of the county. European settlers began arriving in this area around the 1730s, with John Lewis being one of the earliest known settlers. It is named after Rebecca Staunton, the wife of Sir William Gooch, who was the first person to grant parcels of land in the region to settlers back when he was the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Virginia from 1727 to 1749.
Staunton has a rich architectural and historical heritage, boasting many well-preserved examples of Victorian-era architecture. The downtown area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 due to the numerous historical buildings and landmarks. The city is also home to several significant institutions, including the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, founded in 1839, and Mary Baldwin University, established in 1842 as the Augusta Female Seminary.
Fun Fact: Staunton is considered the birthplace of United States President Woodrow Wilson. His birthplace and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum are both located in the city, making it an important destination for history buffs and students of American politics.
