Swallowtail

The Swallowtail, also known as the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, is a large, yellow and black butterfly that is native to Virginia and is now the official state insect of Virginia. The Swallowtail is considered to be one of the most recognizable butterflies in the United States. It is easily identified by its distinctive yellow and black stripes and its wingspan which can reach up to 3.5 inches in width. This species of butterfly is also known for its ability to mimic the appearance of other species of butterflies in order to avoid predation. It was declared the Virginia state insect in 1995, making it one of the first states in the U.S. to have an official state insect. In addition to its iconic yellow and black stripes, the Swallowtail is also known for its long and graceful flight pattern and its strong migratory ability, as it will travel hundreds of miles in search of nectar. The Swallowtail is also a valuable pollinator, helping to ensure the continued growth of Virginia's wildlife and ecosystems.
