A fun and verifiable fact about Bedford, Virginia, is that it is the final resting place of the famous war correspondent Ernie Pyle. He covered World War II and was beloved by Americans for his accounts of the war from the perspective of the soldiers. Pyle was killed by Japanese sniper fire on the island of Ie Shima on April 18, 1945. He was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, but his wife requested that his remains be brought back to their hometown of Bedford after the war ended. His gravesite in Bedford is now a popular tourist attraction.
